GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  
Operates one or more types of automotive equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with such operations, including but not limited to vehicles of 26,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight and over, "fleet drivers" to which employees are generally assigned a specified vehicle; performs heavy manual labor under all weather conditions; does related work as re­quired.
 
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
This is recurring manual work involving responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of various types of motor equipment. The work is performed under supervision in accordance with established policies and procedures.  General instructions are received regarding routine work and detailed instruc­tions are received regarding new or unusual assignments. The work is reviewed by immediate observation, by checking completed work and by periodic or spot checks or by another step in the completion of the work.  Supervision may be exercised over the activities of helpers and laborers.
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)
  • Operates a truck in connection with the removal of snow and ice in the transportation of stone, gravel and supplies.
  • Operates a tractor or truck with snow loader, snow plow, bulldozer, power broom or sweeper, roller or other equip­ment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on automotive equipment.
  • Performs manual labor such as loading and unloading trucks, digging ditches, cleaning sewers, catch basins and culverts.
  • Rakes, tamps and shovels asphalt to assist in patching streets and roads.
  • Excavates and backfills for construction and repairs.
  • Performs unskilled work in connection with the painting and maintenance of signs and bridges.
  • Cuts grass, trims shrubs, rakes leaves, and cuts brush.
  • Sands and cinders streets and roads.
  • May operate rotary snowplow.

When assigned to the Sign Shop:
  • May construct or assemble signs used by Highway Department.
  • Prepares sign blanks for painting by washing, scraping, caulking and sanding.
 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Good knowledge of the operation of tractors, trucks and other motor equipment; working knowledge of construction and maintenance practices including safety precautions; working knowledge of carpentry and/or masonry; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:   
One (1) year of full-time experience or its part-time equivalent in the operation of heavy automotive equipment or construction and maintenance equipment.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  
Possession of a valid New York State CDL Class A or B driver’s license and acceptable driving record is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
